The G1 test: History, eligibility, and more

The state government of Ontario has always been very specific about the eligibility and prerequisites for acquiring a driving license. Learning how to manoeuvre the car or about different vehicles isn’t the only thing you will have to do as a candidate applying for a license. Instead, as stated in the rule book, every candidate has to pass the G1 examination to further become eligible for the driving license. Although many regard this as a simple written examination, knowing its background beforehand will give you leverage.

You will be able to focus on your preparation with the G1 course, having complete knowledge about the examination’s history, its eligibility criteria, and other related facts. That being said, we have compiled all the necessary information about the G1 test that you must know before you start preparing for it.

    G1 test: What is it?

According to the rules, you have to take three different exams to complete the entire cycle of the graduated licensing system in Ontario. G1 is the first-tier examination and the only written test that will give you the entry ticket to this graduation cycle. Once you complete it successfully, you will become eligible for the remaining two examinations, which are in-vehicle road tests.

The eligibility criterion for the G1 test

Below are the criteria you have to meet without fail to become eligible for the written G1 examination for an Ontario driver’s license.

    • You must be at least 16 years of age to sit for the exam.
    • You need to have permanent residency with the Canadian government. Proof of the same needs to be provided along with your application.
    • A proper proof of residence will also be needed if Ontario is your current resident state.
    • If you are an immigrant, documentation of the same will have to be provided along with your application.
    • You have to pass the vision test, which is usually held before you sit for the G1 examination.

Examination pattern of the G1 test

The G1 test for an Ontario driver’s license comprises multiple-choice questions—40 in number, to be precise. It is divided into two groups, each containing 20 questions. These are:

    1. Rules about driving on the road and other associated areas
    2. Traffic and road signs

You should answer 16 questions correctly, at least from each group, to pass the G1 examination. The minimum passing mark for this is 80%, which is why practicing it beforehand is a much better idea. Since there is no time limit, you won’t have to worry about not being able to complete the paper before the final strike of the clock. Both computer-based and paper-based examination modes are available. But you need to appear physically at the examination centre to take the test. Also, the examination paper is available in 26 different languages, including English and French.

Ace the exam with the G1 practice test.

While it might seem that passing this written examination for the driving license won’t be much of a hurdle, in reality, the passing rate is not high enough. So, if you lack confidence or do not have the motivation, taking a G1 practice test seems to be the most reliable option. At least then you can know more about the examination pattern, types of questions that might be asked, and other such facts. Several centres have the option of having you take the G1 practice test multiple times without having to pay a cent. What’s more, you can also avail of G1 course programs that have 3D learning videos, question-and-answer-patterned chapters, and many other things.

    Conclusion

Every candidate must sit for the written G1 test before they can appear for the in-road vehicle examination. Although only two major topics are asked in this exam, you still need to prepare yourself well enough to pass it. So, practice tests and online courses are the best guides you can have to gain confidence and learn everything comprehensively for the actual test.
