Buying latex gloves – Choosing the right type for your needs

Latex gloves provide a barrier against contaminants, chemicals, and infectious materials to ensure the wearer’s safety. Rubber latex gloves are manufactured from a milky sap extracted from rubber trees. The latex is processed, moulded, and cured to create an elastic glove material. Latex gloves are known for their excellent tactile sensitivity. There are various types available based on their purpose.

    Types of latex gloves

    1. Powdered vs. Powder-free
    • Powdered gloves have a fine layer of cornstarch applied to the inside, making them easier to put on and take off. The powder causes allergic reactions and interferes with wound care or electronic assembly.
    • Powder-free gloves undergo a chlorination process that removes the need for cornstarch. Their lower allergy risk makes them ideal for powder-sensitive environments.
    1. Examination vs. Surgical gloves
    • Examination gloves are for general-purpose tasks, such as medical examinations, dental procedures, and food handling. They are available in powdered and powder-free varieties.
    • Surgical gloves are designed for use in surgical procedures. They are usually powder-free and have a higher level of sterility than examination gloves.
    1. Textured vs. Smooth
    • Textured gloves provide grip and tactile sensitivity for handling wet or slippery objects. They are used in dental procedures, laboratory work, and food preparation.
    • Smooth gloves have a uniform surface suitable for surgery or electronic assembly. There is a reduction in the risk of leaving textured imprints on delicate surfaces.

    Choosing suitable latex gloves

When you Buy Latex gloves, ensure a few factors before you choose the most appropriate type for your needs.

    1. Allergies and sensitivities – Latex allergies are common when using latex gloves. Opt for nitrile or vinyl if you or your colleagues have a known latex allergy.
    2. Powder preference – Determine whether powdered or powder-free gloves suit your application. If you work in a powder-sensitive environment or have concerns about allergies, powder-free gloves are the safer choice. However, powdered gloves are a convenient option if the ease of donning is a priority and powder contamination is not a concern.
    3. Intended use – Choose the gloves based on your specific tasks.
    4. Grip and dexterity requirements – Evaluate the level of grip needed for your tasks.
    5. Size and Fit – Too small gloves can restrict hand movement and cause fatigue, while too large gloves can compromise talent and increase the risk of accidents. Most glove manufacturers provide sizing charts to determine the appropriate size.
    6. Quality – Invest in high-quality latex gloves from reputable manufacturers. Look for gloves that meet relevant industry standards, such as ASTM or EN. Higher-quality gloves may have a slightly higher price point but offer better durability, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

Proper use and disposal of latex gloves

Once you have selected the appropriate latex gloves, it’s essential to use and dispose properly to prevent cross-contamination:

    1. Wear gloves after washing and drying your hands.
    2. Avoid touching your hair, skin or personal items while wearing gloves to prevent contamination.
    3. Change gloves if they are punctured, torn, or heavily soiled.
    4. Remove gloves with care, avoiding contact between the outer surface and your skin.
    5. Dispose of used gloves in a designated waste container, following your industry’s guidelines for hazardous waste disposal.

Choosing suitable latex gloves is essential for ensuring the wearer’s safety. Remember to use and dispose of latex gloves properly to prevent cross-contamination. If you have any concerns or doubts about selecting the appropriate latex gloves for your needs, consult with a qualified professional or your industry’s guidelines for further guidance.
